“I was not on form as last year when I finished second behind Margaret Nakintu (who is away in the US). The good thing is that I have won. The route and competition were good,†she said, before going for a dope test. She won herself sh5m for her effort.
All winners in different categories underwent drug testing by officials from South Africa and Kenya before they received their prizes.
Kenya’s Tabitha Kibet, who finished third last year, was runner up with Risper Mayo taking third position.
It was a day for previous runners-up as Kenyan Isaiah Kosgei, who finished second in last year’s event, won the men’s marathon.
The experienced star, who has featured in marathons in London and Netherlands, beat Ugandan Amos Masai to second position.
Masai, 26, a new name in road running, was making his marathon debut and clocked an impressive time of 2:18:42, just 42 seconds outside the qualifying mark of the World Athletics Championship.
“I have been training with (Alex) Malinga in Bukwo and he gave me the technique needed to run a better time. It is just the beginning and I have a bright future,†said Masai, after being crowned.
Pre-race favourite Francis Yiga, dropped out at Bakuli near Mengo shortly after the half way mark.
