writes that the cyclists claim the new tax, that was recently reintroduced by the municipal authorities, was illegal. They claimed the tax was banned by President Yoweri Museveni last year.

According to the new charges, bicycle riders have to pay sh5,000 and motorcycles operators sh15,000 annually.

The cyclists moved around Jinja Central, Walukuba and Mpumudde divisions, denouncing mayor Muhammad Baswale Kezaala.

They rode through the streets shouting ‘Baswale is no longer the mayor of this town’, ‘this is your last term’, ‘Mubarak Kirunda is our mayor’ as others waved photocopies of a newspaper story under the headline sh10,000 boda boda tax is illegal’.

The Jinja Central Division chairman, Kirunda, addressed the cyclists at the RDC’s office and said the tax had been suspended till further notice.
