THE Austrian government has pledged continued support of 7.5m euros (sh1.75b) to Uganda. Franz Breitweiser, the honorary general Consul of Austria to Uganda revealed this during the launch of the Uganda Austria Alumni Association at Horizont3000 offices in Kampala recently.

The association consists of members from disadvantaged families who have benefited from the Austrian Scholarship program to accomplish their dreams.

Breitweiser said Austria will continue supporting different programs as soon as the evaluation process is complete.
“My government will continue giving Uganda funds after the evaluation process is over. I’m sure the outcome of the evaluation process will be positive,” Breitweiser said.

The Austrian government has been releasing funds to support education, provision of clean water and sanitation, good governance, decentralisation policy, and improvement of the private sector.
Other programmes supported include the implementation of reform program and training of local government councillors, especially women.

Breitweiser said the formation of the association will see a more purposeful forum for promoting a meaningful professional, personal and cultural relationship between the people of Austria and Uganda.

He pledged Austria’s support, both morally and financially through the scholarship program to turn the association into a forum that adds value to members and the community.

“For the last ten years, the Austrian government has been supporting postgraduate education for Ugandans. The major objective is to foster national development through capacity building for political, social, economic and private sector development,” Breitweiser said.

Ebrahim Kizito, the Program manager Horizont3000, in Uganda, said that over 3000 students have benefited from the Austrian scholarship programme.

“Over 440 have done postgraduate studies, 2677 trained for short courses, 69 from distance learning and over 20 from industrial training, water and sanitation engineering,” Kizito said.

Present at the launch were Kathrin Hawighorst, Austrian program regional director East Africa and MP Kasese district, Kizza Winfred.
