The land title for Uganda’s only ultra-modern stadium at Namboole has vanished from the lands ministry.

Ignatius Kagongi, the manager of Mandela National Stadium, said this came to their attention after encroachment on their 48.52-hectare land.

Kagongi said Kireka Prayer Palace and Kireka Sports View Hotel encroached on their land. He said unknown people started the fresh encroachment on the wetland behind Sports View Hotel.

“We need this land for other facilities that are to be housed there,’’ said Kagongi. A swimming pool, boxing ring and sports academies are to be built on another piece of land encroached on by army veterans near the northern gate.

Acting commissioner for sports Omara Apitta, who is in charge of government sports land, said they will follow up the issue.

“I inspected the land and confirmed the encroachment. For the case of the missing land title, the ministry will follow it up with them (The Uganda Land Commission). They had the title and the stadium only had copies,” he said. He said since the complex became a company, they could now have the land title under their name.

Commission’s secretary BK Mubbala said, “Let them come and discuss the matter with us.”
