SIR — I read with indignation a story in the New Vision of November 20 entitled “Kyenjojo officers fail to account for sh100m”. It was reported that the chief administrative officer, Muhenda Rujumba, the chief financial officer, Julius Kamanyire and senior accountant Alfred Kaahwa failed to produce vouchers for sh100m advanced to the district staff in the 2000/1 financial year.

The district chairman Mr William Kaija should also be queried because there is no financial transaction that can be finalised without his knowledge. If the district leadership fails to account for just sh100m only, it is likely more taxpayers’ money has been swindled.

The local government accounts committee chaired by David Ringe surcharged the officers sh1m for failure to recover the money and is supposed to be deducted from their salaries. But this is not enough. This is corruption in a new district with meagre resources.

The IGG should intervene more rigourously and let the law take its course. We need an upright leadership in our district.
