PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has warned the National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs not to fight for positions and power within the party.

The President made the warning yesterday while reacting to a paper presented by Frank Tumwebaze (Kamwenge) that analysed the February 23 general elections.

“Power and position do not mean big salaries. That is why I refused a proposal to hike my salary,” Museveni was quoted as saying.

He told a two-day closed caucus meeting at Parliament Conference Hall that MPs and other party members could serve in many other capacities.

The President’s remarks followed MPs’ concern that cliques and infighting in the party would hinder cohesion.

General duties minister Adolf Mwesige chaired the meeting that started at 9:00am. By press time, the meeting was still going on.
The NRM secretary general, who is also the security minister, Amama Mbabazi, reacted to Tumwebaze’s paper.

A source that attended the meeting said MPs stressed the need for strong party structures for mobilisation.

The meeting cited the Sembabule/Rwemiyaga controversy between the foreign affairs minister, Sam Kutesa and area MP Theodore Ssekikubo.
The caucus will also discuss a paper on how to raise funds for the party.

Members were happy that the NRM was instrumental in creating a safe environment for development. They stressed the need for more funds for the poverty fight.
