THREE students of Kasawo Secondary School in Mukono died and 12 other people were seriously injured when their taxi collided with a lorry.
The majority of the students had just completed their Senior Six examinations and were heading for a picnic, Police said.
The 9:30pm accident on Friday night occurred at Nalubabwe when the commuter taxi heading to Kampala rammed into a Tata lorry heading in the opposite direction.
The lorry had only one headlamp on, central region Police chief Benson Oyo Nyeko said yesterday.
Muzamilu Luyombya, 19, Abas Kayiwa, 20 and Teddy Nanziri, 19, died on the spot, Police said.
Police identified the injured as James Nsubuga, 18, Mbazzi, 21, Robert Mukasa, 20, Jason Kokunda, 19, Ivan Kenyi, 19, Alex Ssemanda, 19 and Evia Nandujja, 19, all from Kasawo SS.
The others were Justin Kayaga, 19, a student of Kayuni Bright College, the taxi driver Sula, Ida Lwere, 30, of Nasuuti and Zam Nabakooza, 23, of Nakifuma also in Mukono.
The injured were all rushed to Naggalama hospital, Nyeko said, adding that the lorry driver fled.
“We suspect the lorry was using the left headlamp. When the taxi driver saw it, he though it was a motorcycle,†Nyeko said. Nyeko, who said they were investigating the incident, warned that driving vehicles in a dangerous mechanical condition (DMCs) was an offence.
“We are trying to find out why the vehicle has been in use when its state is not good. It is a mistake for Police officers to allow DMCs to continue operating,†he said.
City FM stations early yesterday said five people had died in the accident but Police said they had only recorded three. Meanwhile, unknown thugs broke into the offices of Ultimate security in Entebbe on Friday night and made off with sh12m.
