A TOTAL of 288 cases of cholera have been reported in Kampala in the last one month, Dr. Joseph Senzoga has said.

“This is a disaster. The number is increasing each day,” Senzoga, the Kampala City Council medical officer, said.

By 12:00pm yesterday, Mulago Hospital’s Ward 4A had admitted 11 new cases.
Previously, 30 people had been admitted. Eight were male and seven were female. There were also 15 children.

The ward’s clinical head, Dr. Baterana Byarugaba, said there had been three deaths.

He said the most affected areas were Mulago, bwaise, Ntinda, Rugana, Katanga, Kamwokya and Makindye.
At Kawala health centre, 50 people were admitted with cholera, five days into the new month. In November, 120 patients had been admitted.

By press time yesterday, 42 people had been discharged, as the centre awaited more patients from Mulago Hospital.

“We are trying to shift to Mulago Hospital. We even received a cholera victim from Wakiso. Recently we had a shortage of supplies but now we are stable,” Dr. Richard Walyomo, the in charge of Kawala Health Centre, said.
