My penis bends when erect
Dear Doctor,
When my penis erects, it bends towards one side. In other words, it is not straight. What can I do?
Daniel

Dear Daniel,
You do not need to worry. Not all penises are straight. In fact most penises are not ruler straight. They usually have a bit of a curve to one side or another. This does not prevent successful sexual intercourse nor does it stop the men from enjoying sex. It also does not affect fertility. It is therefore usually a normal difference. But if the curve is too big, or there is any pain or discomfort during sex, or a difficulty in ejaculating, you should see a doctor to make sure there is no physical problem and if there is, get it corrected.

Can I get AIDS through oral sex?
Dear Doctor,
I had oral sex with someone whose status I am not sure of. What are my chances of getting HIV?
S

Dear S,
Although it is true that one can get HIV from unprotected oral sex, the chances of getting it are very low. They are much lower than chances of getting it from unprotected vaginal or anal sex.
The major risk factors for oral sex are ejaculating into the mouth and having wounds or sores in the mouth. You should have an HIV test to know your status and stop worrying about it. For safe oral sex, you need to be sure of your partner’s status or do not ejaculate into the mouth.

When is it best for me to conceive?
Dear Doctor,
I want to conceive. Tell me about the safe days and danger days.
Jalia

‘Safe’ and ‘Danger’ days come from the need to prevent pregnancy by avoiding sex when the woman is
fertile.
In this case, ‘safe days’ are when the woman is not fertile so one can have unprotected sex, and ‘danger days’ are when she is fertile and pregnancy can result.
This knowledge can be used to determine when a woman should have sex to become pregnant.
It is estimated that 80% of fertile couples that regularly have sex over a period of one year will get a
pregnancy. To know when you are fertile, you should sit down with your family planning adviser or midwife for a complete explanation. You will be told about the body temperature, the cervical mucus and the relation to the periods and fertility. You will make a calendar of your days and know when your fertile days come. You should then have sex when you are fertile. Most couples do not need to follow this, as it would tend to restrict when they have sex. Its also not fail proof.
