SIR — I wish to comment on some of the remarks about the Makerere lecturers’ strike attributed to President Museveni.
in the story “Makerere reopens in January” published on Tuesday, it was reported that Museveni criticised the lecturers for resorting to strikes and that paralysing the system is a wrong method.

He also wondered who would have liberated the country if he had gone on strike when he was in the bush. My submission is that the liberation Museveni talked about is actually a result of his strike and five-year paralysis techniques.

What is a strike? a strike describes collective action undertaken by groups of workers in the form of a refusal to perform work. It is usually in protest against low pay or bad work conditions.

While the Makerere lecturers are on strike about low pay, Museveni and his colleagues went on strike against bad governance.

They did this by going to the bush and causing paralysis that brought us peace. Sometimes discussions just seem not to work and some paralysis is justified to push the point home.

It was also unfair for him to blame the lecturers for ‘closing’ the university when the directive did not come from any lecturer or MUASA.

Remember the lecturers were at one point even barred from accessing their offices and the internet! How could they have closed the university?
