GARBAGE flies can develop from egg to adult in just seven days under ideal temperature. Eggs are usually laid in decaying meats, garbage or dog faeces. They are strongly attracted to human foods and garbage and can make cooking outdoors difficult due to the nuisance they pose. Control measure: As with the other nuisance fly species, eradication of larval developmental sites is the most efficient means of control.
Garbage cans should be set out for pick-up at least once a week even if they are not full because garbage that sits for more than one week allows for the development of adult flies. The cans should also be regularly washed with soap to remove any garbage residues.
Chemicals use generally leads only to short-term relief for they target adult flies and leave the larval fly stages intact which produces the next generation.
