UGANDA Cranes fell to hard-fighting Sudan in the semi-final of the CECAFA Al Moudi Senior Challenge Cup here last night.
A 10-man Cranes which stretched Sudan for 120 minutes lost out in spot kicks, ending the Ugandans’ quest for a 10th CECAFA soccer title. Substitute Tony Odur was sent off for elbowing an opponent hardly 10 minutes after replacing Hassan Mubiru.
Simeon Masaba and Hassan Wasswa missed their spot kicks as Sudan won 6-5.
Vincent Kayizzi, Richard Malinga, Robert Kimuli Geoffrey Sserunkuuma and Johnson Bagoole converted their spot kicks.
In regular time Uganda started off the match on a bad note. Clumsy Shaka Okello committed a defensive blunder which Eldor Badreldin capitalised on to give Sudan the lead two minutes into the game.
Kayizzi levelled for Uganda on 16 minutes with a brilliant shot taken from a tight angle.
Yousif Alaeldin caught the Cranes defence napping again to restore Sudan’s lead on 52 minutes.
Cranes tactician Laszlo Csaba replaced Okello with left-back Robert Kimuli, a change which brought relative stability in the Cranes defence. Substitute Sserunkuuma equalised off a well taken free-kick by Richard Malinga.
