SUGAR Corporation of Uganda Ltd (SCOUL) has failed to beat its 48,000 tonnes production target this year, the chief executive, S.C. Khanna, said on Wednesday.

“We can only produce 40,000 tonnes. This is less by 8,000 tonnes,” Khanna said. He said this was less than the 42,000 tonnes produced in 2005.

He blamed this on drought and diversion of sugarcane by out-growers.
The Lugazi-based firm gets 500,000 tonnes of sugarcane from its plantations and 20% from the about 500 out-growers annually.

“The current rains have also disrupted timely transportation of sugarcane from out plantations to the factory,” Khanna said.

He said the firm would continue donating free cane seeds, technical skills and tractors for ploughing out- growers’ fields.

Khanna said sh500m in loan schemes had been established in past years to boost out-growers.
