THE Egyptian government will give Uganda a grant of $4.5m (about sh8b) to reconstruct landing sites, a top official said recently.
The grant agreement will be signed by Uganda water minister Maria Mutagamba and her Egyptian counterpart Dr. Mahmoud Abu Zeid (right), the official added.

The money will also be used to extend the water weed control project by another three years, Dr. Mahmoud Zeid, the Uganda-Egypt Aquatic Weed Control Project chief, Dr. Ahmed Ragab, said.
The money will bring the total amount given by Egyptians for fishing-related activities to $18.4m since 1999.

Ragab explained that the funds would also be spent to construct new landing sites and control the water hyacinth on Victoria, Kyoga and Albert lakes.

The Egyptian government recently released $300,000 (about sh537m) for the rehabilitation of PortBell Pier and Gaba Landing Site.

“When the reconstruction of the Gaba Landing Site and the rehabilitation of Port Bell Pier are complete, 400 fishermen will benefit,” Ragab told reporters in Kampala.
