Former Afrigo Band dancer Sarah Ndagire, also a presenter on Dembe FM, has finally made her mark on the local music scene. Ndagire recently launched her debut seven-track CD at the National Theatre during a jam-packed concert.

At the launch, Ndagire provided a breath of fresh air from concerts that feature artistes singing over CD tracks.

Katitiira, the title track, draws on old Kinyankole folk songs and it celebrates honest friendships. It is infused with cutting edge folk-pop beats that would appeal to any radio listener. Its video is already showing on WBS TV.

Any listener will be gripped by the lyrics in which a jilted woman calls out to her long lost lover to return home.

Another song on the album is Olikomeyo. Here, Ndagire takes on a more sultry and dejected tone as she sings about a man who abandons his wife and children and goes to live with a mistress.

The song has an infectious simmering frustration about it. But listeners are consoled later on when the singer vows that she would never allow the man back.

It seems like modern music is looking to the 1980’s for inspiration. Ndagire does so in Twalinga bato, a lovely song that reminisces the childhood joys in the countryside.

Much of the song leans on drowsy Afro-jazz. However, towards the end, the song crystallizes into 1980’s style pop rhythms. Little wonder that it is a favourite of many urban people who grew up in the countryside in the 1980’s.

Y’ono Omwana is a sentimental praise song. It is done to subtle bouncy beats, with the overlapping choruses adding a touch of sensuality. And it later crystallizes into Zouk rhythms that would sweep anyone off their feet.

Ndagire was once a singer with the Christ the King Church Choir before she joined the Afrigo band as a back-up vocalist and dancer.
