Paint application contributes a lot to the final outlook and durability of a structure. However, using paint on a poorly prepared surface, affects the end result, leading to cracks and peeling off of the paint.

Matthew Nabwiso, a sales manager at Peacock paints says before paint application one should consider the following: Is it a high traffic area like a corridor, a bedroom that requires cool calm painting or a children’s playroom.

“Specific paints are meant for specific purposes and surfaces,” Nabwiso says, adding that one can apply paint in three ways – by use of a roller, paintbrush or spray gun.

He says, however, that spray guns use power and are expensive although they do a neat work. A roller is fast and neat and can be used anywhere, but in corners one will have to go for either a brush or a spray gun.

Charles Opendi, a field technical officer with Executive painters, Kibuli, Mbogo road, says with paint application one needs to be keen because poor application may affect the end result even when one has laboured to purchase high-quality paint.

One needs to clean the surface before applying the paint. If it is a wall, making sure it is dust-free is very important. If it the roof you want to paint, then make sure it is dew and rusty-free, because both conditions will cause the paint to peel off.

“If it is the new iron sheets or those galvanised with oil you want to paint, you would need to clean them with hydrochloric acid to ensure that they dry and free from grease, oil or dampness,”Opendi explains.

When applying paint on walls, one needs to apply the wood primer first, an undercoat that helps the paint to stick on the walls before applying the paint itself, Opendi says.

He complains that some people are always in a hurry to finish construction, but the best result would be if one waited for the walls to dry, before venturing into using the paint after applying the wood primer.

With dump wall surfaces, sometimes because the buildings are built in wetlands, one needs to go for latex primer sealer before using the final paint so as to help protect the walls and painting, Nabwiso says.

“However, with old walls, it is important to seek the expert painters’ or the paint company dealers advice before hiring painters to do the job,” he says.

Amol Joshi, Regal Paints, general manager, says, it is important to apply paint in the dry season because the rainy seasons causes the paint to take long to dry, thereby affecting its quality.
