KARIMOJONG warriors whose guns were removed under the disarmament exercise should be re-armed as part of a community-based security system, the Karamoja Regional Council has said.

The council recommended that the Government issue the warriors guns and recruit them into the local security system.

The council brought together the district leaders of Nakapiripirit, Abim, Kotido, Kaabong and Moroto.

“A total of 150 people per sub-county be recruited into the community-based security system and those who surrender their illegal guns should be issued with official guns,” read the recommendation.

The council also asked that the developments in Karamoja should not be pegged on the recovery of illegal guns.
It appealed to the government to operationalise the Karamoja Integrated disarmament and development Programme (KIDDP).

The recommendation was made at the end of a two-day regional council meeting held in Moroto on Wednesday.
DANIDA facilitated the meeting as a forum for updating KIDDP.
