Dear Doctor,
When I brush my teeth I bleed in the mouth. Moreso, my teeth are yellow and I have bad breath. What can I do?
Hassan, Mbarara

Dear Hassan,
You most likely have an inflammation of the gum. This is what causes the bleeding on brushing.

Over the years, a hard substance called plaque develops on the teeth’s surface. It is formed by bacteria in the mouth and forms in spite of the best brushing.

The plaque pushes back our gums and makes them become easily infected, causing bleeding when you brush. It also leads to bad breath. The gums can also be inflamed if you brush your teeth very vigorously.

You should visit a dentist who will remove the plaque. This will allow your gums to heal.

The dentist will also give you advice on how to brush and floss so that plaque does not build up very fast. Nevertheless, we all have to visit the dentists’ regularly to remove this plaque so that our teeth and gums remain healthy.
