THE construction of the new Shimoni Demonstration School is to cost sh23b, the city education director has revealed.

Annie Galiwango said: “We have agreed with the Ministry of Education that the construction of Shimoni starts immediately because Shimoni has to regain its original status.”

In an interview on Monday, Galiwango disclosed that Kingdom Hotel Investments had paid $2m (sh3.7b) towards the cost of constructing the new premises on Lugogo by-pass.

She did not reveal where the rest of the money would come from. Kingdom Investments is owned by Saudi Prince, Alwaleed bin Talal Alsaud, who was allocated the old Shimoni land in the city centre to construct a hotel.

The former premises housed the primary school and a teachers’ training college. Galiwango said work at the new site would be in phases: the first will be the construction of the primary school, the second will be that of the teachers’ quarters and the third will be the teachers’ college.

Finance minister Ezra Suruma officially handed over the Shimoni land to Kingdom Investments on Monday at the ministry headquarters in Kampala.

A temporary site is scheduled to be ready by the end of this month, well in time for the start of the new school year.
Naguru flats have been availed for the teachers’ accommodation.

Galiwango also said KCC was negotiating with the education ministry to give the teachers a resettlement package.

“We are still negotiating with the ministry to give this whole exercise a human face. The 61 teachers and 10 non-teaching staff should be given a modest rent for at least two months,” she noted.
