7 Muslim council members suspended

THE wrangle in the Muslim community has taken a new twist with the suspension of seven executive members of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).

The group was accused of insubordination to Mufti Sheikh Shaban Mubajje.

One of the victims, Yahaya Lukwago yesterday said: “We were invited for the joint sessional meeting on Saturday to discuss issues about the alleged sale of council property. But before the discussion, one of the members, Kaaya Jingo, called for our suspension, saying that ‘we were against the council administration and Mubajje’. The meeting resolved that we step down.

“We obliged to their resolution but we have not received any formal communication.”

The council joint session comprises 45 members of the UMSC executive and the college of sheikhs.

Lukwago said the meeting did not have the quorum.

The council in November suspended its chairman Hajji Ali Adrama and secretary for religious affairs Mahdi Kakooza, saying they had shown disrespect to Mubajje.

Jingo reportedly told the meeting that the seven members participated in the duwah (prayers) imploring God to punish Mubajje over the alleged sale of council property.

These include plots 30, 102 and 104 on William Street in Kampala and 12-16 on Port Bell road in Luzira.

Others suspended are hassan Kirya, Isa byekwaso, Ismail mugomba, Umar Bakasambe, Ahmed Twaib and Zubair Kayongo.
