THE year 2006 is one some tennis lovers would want to forget quickly. The playing standards went far below par, dishonesty erupted among the top brass, local tournaments were forsaken and some leaders opted to quit.

Nevertheless, some players enjoyed dominance in the sport.

A new executive

In a bid to save the face of the game, the local fraternity put in place a new executive in June. Led by the senior presidential advisor on media affairs John Nagenda the new team was faced with the challenge of revamping the Uganda Tennis Association.

The executive started by attracting the Hima Cement sh10m sponsorship package. This boosted the Uganda leg of the International Tennis Federation Futures tournament – a ray of hope for better things ahead.

International meets
Uganda’s pathetic performance at the Euro/Africa Zone IV Tennis Davis Cup in Malta was a forgettable experience, losing all four group matches.
Uganda’s youngsters also left a lot to be desired in the ITF Futures tournament. It was only Patrick Ochan who put up some resistance.

New Kid on the block

Duncan Mugabe, 15, is the new kid on the block. He held the national flag high in ITF championships. His third place finish after upsetting two top seeds in the Africa Junior Champs in Egypt was memorable.
