THREE UPDF soldiers were yesterday charged with robbery by the Court martial at Kiziramfumbi Community Hall in Hoima Town.

The 10 members of the court martial from the 1st Division headquarters in Kakiri, Wakiso district, were led by Maj. Willy Ndinda. Division commander Brig. Levi Karuhanga attended.

The suspects, lieutenants Edgar Mwesigwa, 34, attached to Kagadi Army Barracks in Kibaale, Hakim Asiimwe, 37, UPDF artillery-Kaseta Army detach and Arthur Asingwire, denied the charge.

Prosecution said the three suspects on October 27 last year stole beef, skins, weighing scales and money from butchers at Kiziramfumbi Trading centre.
It also produced 10 witnesses to support its case.

This is the first time the Court martial has sat in Hoima district since 1986, when the National Resistance Movement took power.

Hundreds of civilians including Buhanguzi MP Tom Kyamuhenda, sector commander Bunyoro Maj. Joram Kagezi and sub-county chairperson Patrick Jongo attended court, which is expected to close on Friday.

Brig. Kale Kaihura, the UPDF chief political commissar, told residents that the complainants wrote to President Yoweri Museveni, who instructed Kaihura to investigate the incident.

Kaihura said Museveni ordered that the Court Martial sit at Kiziramfumbi, where the alleged offence was committed.

Witnesses said the three stormed the butcheries and ordered the owners to surrender their beef at gunpoint.
