THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has taken over the collection of court fees.
Any payment in court has to be made to URA’s Orient bank account.
This follows a report by the Inspector General of Government that many courts were misappropriating funds.
The Auditor General (AG) also recommended that the funds be handled by another body because courts had failed to present proper accountability, whenever required. Previously, payments were made to court cashiers.
John Muhanguzi, the under-secretary, courts of judicature, said the change was effected this month and was currently operational in 11 courts in Kampala.
“We wanted to start with Kampala and at a later stage, the exercise shall spread to up-country courts. The up-country courts are continuing with the previous system.
“We had queries with the AG. People used to pay court fees and at the time of refund, in case of any, the money was not available,†Muhanguzi said.
