Who said it does not pay to be chaste? If not, celebrated local gospel singer Betty Nakibuuka is an exception. Nakibuuka, who has been a Born Again Christian since she was 16, got married to husband John Senyonjo at 24 whilst still a virgin.
The singer recently scooped a lucrative deal to African Child Foundation, a charitable Non Governmental Organisation, to hold an anti-AIDS campaign and help sensitise the youth about the dangers of AIDS and advantages of abstinence.
African Child Foundation, based in Ndejje Zone, Namasuba, advocates for the welfare of orphaned children and AIDS widows, whom they look after through their Women Empowerment programme.
The show, code-named Against AIDS will take place tomorrow, Saturday 15 in an open ground opposite Millennium Hotel in Zzana. Entrance is free.
“I will be performing with The Chain Breakers, my back-up group but I will also take time off to talk to young people about the dangers of HIV/AIDS using my experience,†the singer said.
The 29-year-old singer, who was voted Best Female Artiste at the inaugural TOP Radio National Music Awards last October, is reaping the dividends of keeping her virginity till marriage.
Joyce Kanyike, African Child Foundation administrator said Nakibuuka’s show will be the highlight of an aggressive anti-AIDs sensitisation campaign the organisation is undertaking.
Nakibuuka is currently enjoying radio success with her mega hit Gwe Luyimba Lwange, a cross-over song that has enjoyed as much airplay on secular radio stations as it has on Christian radio stations this year.
Meanwhile, the singer who returned recently from a tour of Sweden following her success at the TOP Gospel music awards says she could work with Sweden-based reggae star Madoxx Sematimba.
“I met Madoxx in Gothenburg during a show I was doing there with Mirex (the promotions company that invited her). He expressed a lot of interest in working with me,†Nakibuuka said.
“I like his brand and respect his song-writing abilities. I believe there is a lot I could learn from him. This could be a good chance for me to reach out to his fans with my ministry as well.†she added
Nakibuuka’s music videos Gwe Luyimba Lwange and Olaba Bayimba featured on Swedish national television.
She also appeared on Kivebulaya, a radio programme in Sweden, which is directly transmitted to CBS FM.
