The Military Court Martial has demoted two UPDF officers and
sentenced them to six months in prison after convicting them of misconduct and theft.

Lt. Edgar Mwesigwa, the sector intelligence officer for Bunyoro and Buganda operations and Lt. Hakim Asiimwe were sentenced on Thursday by the First Division Court Martial after four days of trial at Kiziranfumbi in Hoima district.

The army court, chaired by Major Willy Ndinda, demoted the officers from Lt. to 2nd Lt. for two years in a ruling witnessed by hundreds of people in Kiziranfumbi Community Hall.

Ndinda said Mwesigwa and Asiimwe were found guilty of scandalous behaviour contrary to the UPDF Act.

Mwesigwa was also found guilty of threatening violence while Asiimwe was convicted of theft.

Mwesigwa had earlier been charged with six counts of threatening violence, scandalous behaviour, assault, destruction of property and aggravated robbery.
Asiimwe and Mwesigwa were also charged with scandalising the army.

Prosecutor warrant officer Harry Lulecera said the officers stole meat at Kiziranfumbi trading centre on October 27 last year.

Lulecera said Asiimwe drew a pistol, beat up a group of people and forced them to carry the meat he had stolen from them, while his superior, Lt. Mwesigwa, was watching in approval.

Mwesigwa also assaulted an old woman, Constance Balimaino, at Kabwoya trading centre.

The trial followed complaints by Kabwoya and Kiziranfumbi sub-county residents to President Yoweri Museveni last year.

The President directed the UPDF Chief Political Commissar, Brig. Kale Kaihura (above), to investigate the allegations.
