UGANDAN champions, SC Villa take on perennial regional rivals, Simba SC of Tanzania in the opening match of the CECAFA club championships on April 23 in Tanzania.

According to the draw released by CECAFA secretary general, Nicholas Musonye here yesterday, Villa’s next opponent on April 25 is Sudan's El Hilal.

Their third match will pit them against Burundian champions, Muzinga on April 29. They wind up their preliminaries against minnows, Elman of Somalia on May 1.

Villa's group opponents Hilal and Elman will also square it out on the same day. However, Musonye did not specify the times and venues for the event, leaving the option to the host national association.

Last week, Musonye said the venue had been switched from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza owing to its convenience to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi teams.

Defending champions, APR of Rwanda will open the title defence on April 25 against Zanzibar's KMKM (Kikosi Maalum cha Kuangamiza Magendo), a swahili acronym for special unit to combat corruption.

Group A will feature Simba, Villa, El Hilal, El Man and Muzinga, group B: APR, Mutibwa (Tanzania), Awasa (Ethiopia), KMKM, group C: Ulinzi (Kenya), Rayon (Rwanda), Adulis (Eritrea), Gendemarie (Djibouti).

The event is being sponsored by Rwandan president, Paul Kagame to the tune of $60,000 in prize money. The winners will get $30,000 while second and third will receive $20,000 and $10,000 respectively.

It will be the fourth edition since 2002 when Kagame volunteered to sponsor it. Simba won it on inauguration, Villa the following year while APR clinched it last year.
