ALEX Malinga’s time of two hours 16 minutes and 29 seconds has raised the number of Ugandan athletes who have qualified for the World Athletics Championship to five.

The marathon runner, taking part in the Mumbai leg of the “Greatest Race On Earth” marathon sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank, ran inside the qualifying time of 2.18:00 for the championship set for Helsinki, Finland in August.

He joins other stars in long distance ace Boniface Kiprop (10000m, 5000m), Dorcus Inzikuru (3000mSteepleChase, 5000m) and Wilson Busienei Kipkemei (10000m) who have all qualified in group A and Pascal Owor (800m) who qualified in Group B for the event.

“It is good for him. That is one of the world’s premier events and after failing to qualify for the Olympics, let him try his luck,” said Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) secretary Beatrice Ayikoru.

She said that Kiprop and Inzikuru qualified for two events but they might end up selecting one.

“The programme will determine but being a meet for the world’s cream, it is better for one to compete in one event for better results.”
