KAMPALA — The media has downplayed the danger of AIDS following the availability of anti-retroviral drugs, First Lady Mrs. Janet Museveni has said. She said at the annual Uganda Youth Forum recently that the youth in Uganda should not get carried away by the media reports on the matter. The forum took place at Didi’s World in Kansanga under the theme “Arise and Shine.”

Guard jailed
KAMPALA — A 27-year-old security guard employed by Securex was yesterday remanded in Luzira Prison after he was charged with defiling an eight-year-old girl. Prosecutor Carol Nabasa said Isma Kalanzi lured the victim to his home and molested her on November 14, 2004. He denied the charged and the case was adjourned until February 8.

Govt hailed
JINJA — Kyabazinga Henry Muloki of Busoga has hailed the government on the progress of the Universal Primary education scheme. He said in a statement that the performance in the recently released primary leaving exams showed that the scheme would liberate the poor and underdeveloped communities. He congratulated Busoga region on its performance.

Kabira aid
KAMPALA — Kabira International School has donated sh5m (about US$2,865) to Tsunami victims. The money was raised by the pupils of the junior and mid-primary school, in response to an appeal by the Uganda Red Cross Society (urcs). It was yesterday handed over to the secretary general of URCS, Alice Amukur Uwase.

KAMPALA — The Minister of Public Service has announced that today is a public holiday. In a circular issued yesterday, Okumu Ringa said the day will be observed as a public holiday throughout the country for the Idd El Adhuha celebrations.
