A second lieutenant, said to be a signaller of Joseph Kony’s Gilver Brigade of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has surrendered.

The UPDF chief of intelligence in the north, Col. Charles Otema-Awany, on Monday identified him as Lt. Opoka.

He said Opoka surrendered willingly to the UPDF in Anaka, Nwoya county, west of Gulu town.
Former LRA adviser Brig. Kenneth Banya said Opoka was a senior LRA radio signaller who had served for a long time in the bush.

He said most of the signallers had either been killed, surrendered or captured in earlier battles by the UPDF. On January 30, an LRA lieutenant,  Nyero, surrendered to the UPDF in Lugwar in Kitgum.

The acting UPDF public relations officer in the north, Lt. Ronald Kakurungu, said the UPDF had killed 22 rebels in various battles in Acholi sub-region since January 27.

He said many LRA rebels had surrendered due to pressure from the UPDF.
