THE Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is to recruit 2,500 graduates as part of President Yoweri Museveni’s efforts to professionalise the army.

The Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, said the recruits would help the army to catch up with modern technology.

He was speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the field artillery and air defence training school in Butiaba in Masindi on Wednesday.

“Most of these recruits will be picked from science-related disciplines because some of our equipment, especially in the artillery and air defence, requires science and technology expertise,” Nyakairima said.

He urged the youth to join the army, saying it is no longer a profession of people who are deemed to be failures.

the defence ministry permanent secretary, Gabindadde Musoke, said the army leadership had undertaken several projects to modernise the institution.
