“A model for mission.” This is how Gill Poole (right), a team manager with Church Mission Society (CMS) in the UK, describes Uganda’s Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF) choir. She was speaking at the choir’s celebration of 20 years of ministry, at the St Francis Students’ Centre at Makerere University recently.

“Whenever my friends at CMS ask me for a mission model, I point them to the AYF,” Gill said.
CMS has been partners with the AYF in their mission to evangelise and disciple through renewed worship in the Anglican Church of Uganda and worldwide. CMS arranged the recording of two of AYF’s albums during tours of the United Kingdom.

Gill, who first met the AYF at Makerere University’s St Francis Chapel in 1990, recalled how the then group leader, Abraham Owino, shared its vision.

The vision was eventually taken to churches in Britain, which showed an interest, but because there were no visual aids to share the ministry, Gill found equipment to help in recording the music so that tapes could be sold in the UK.
“There are many evangelists who do independent ministry, others have international ministries but abandon their home place. Others form communities just for themselves. AYF combines all. They are devoted to spreading the gospel,” she told an audience of about 500.

The lively audience was treated to a selection of compositions, including singles from the albums ‘Streams in the Desert’ and ‘UK 93’ that were recorded in Britain.
