MULAGO Hospital has installed a tank to supply liquid oxygen to patients.
By Eliphaz Ssekabira MULAGO Hospital has installed a tank to supply liquid oxygen to patients.
The acting director, Dr. Gideon Kikampikaho, on Monday told the hospital management committee that the new system would reduce shortage of oxygen at the hospital.
“With effect from January 31, we started using piped liquid oxygen. This means that press reports about thefts of oxygen cylinders will no longer appear,†Kikampikaho said. He said the liquid oxygen would cater for 60% of the oxygen needed.
The tank supplied by British oxygen corporation can supply 5,500 cubic metres to take the hospital for more than a month.
All clinical areas including theatres are connected to the system.
Kikampikaho asked the engineering department to detect leakages and to ensure that re-filling is done in time to avoid shortages.
“We need to phase out the supply of huge cylinders and keep a few small ones for emergency.â€
“These cylinders must move according to serial numbers and end users must keep logo books to monitor their movement,†he said.
Mulago Hospital is faced with allegations of oxygen thefts.
The assistant director in charge of personnel, Opio Okiror, warned that hospital employees connected to the thefts would be sacked. Ends
