THE Government has spent over sh57b on the rehabilitation and development of war-torn northern Uganda.

The state minister for northern Uganda rehabilitation, Grace Akello, told the Government’s weekly press briefing yesterday that the government had not ignored the region ravaged by LRA insurgency since 1987.

Akello, who repeatedly complained that she does not get positive media coverage, said the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) had disbursed sh25b for the recovery of the north and that 1,621 community projects were direct beneficiaries.

She said the projects include construction of infrastructure such as classrooms, science laboratories, health centres and community roads.

“These are known as community development initiatives. These number 1,225 and are to be found in each of the 18 NUSAF districts.

The total amount spent on these projects is sh17b,” Akello said.
She said NUSAF had disbursed sh7b to women, youth, people with disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS and former abductees for income-generating projects.

Akello said NUSAF was also funding peace initiatives by funding cultural, religious and other leaders interested in peace building.

“Under this initiative, some sh400m has been given to projects started by ex-LRA commanders Brig. Kenneth Banya, Lt. Col. Okwonga and Capt. Apire to resettle the families of ex-LRA fighters in Gulu,” she said.

Ministers Namirembe Bitamazire for education and James Nsaba Buturo for information attended the briefing.
