The decision to make science compulsory in secondary school is a step in the right direction
SIR— I thank the Government for making science subjects compulsory up to Senior Four.
SIR— I thank the Government for making science subjects compulsory up to Senior Four. Although a number of contradictory views have been written on this policy in your paper, I wish to reiterate that this policy has been long overdue for a number of reasons: The importance of science and technology in this country cannot be overemphasised. We need pharmacists, doctors, engineers and others almost daily in our lives. It is the responsibility of the Government therefore to ensure that these professions are produced and are available. The choice for the subjects/career had been introduced too early in Senior One, when students are too young to make realistic decision based on ability, benefit and/or interest. With good career guidance and teaching, interest can be created and ability enhanced. Previously, subjects were chosen basing on peer pressure and ease of subject without due regard for the pass marks. Consequently, opportunities in future careers were neglected. Making science compulsory will therefore force school owners to give due weight the subject.
