Overweight increases risk of kidney stones

OBESITY increases the risk of kidney stones, especially in women, who usually run half the chance than men in developing the deposits.

“Fat tissue may decrease the body’s ability to respond to insulin, which could cause changes to urine that favours the growth of the stones,” Eric Taylor, a physician at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said.

He said more research needs to be done to confirm the hypothesis, but the study he led “found a dramatic link between weight-gain and kidney stones” that, next is to find out if losing weight will lower the risk of having the condition repeat itself.

His report found men, who had gained 16kg in adulthood were about 40% more likely to suffer kidney stones, while women, who gained the same over a similar period were about 70% more likely to have them, compared to normal-weight people.

Women with wide waists had a 71% greater risk of kidney stones compared to those with small waists. Men with big waist sizes had a 48% greater risk. The syudy was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
