DONORS influenced the increase of Makerere University (MUK) tuition fees, Parliament heard yesterday.

University planner Mohammad Kibirige Mayanja told the parliament committee on social services that their development partners had threatened to halt aid because the university could not meet costs of its infrastructure.

Education minister Namir-embe Bitamazire led officials from her ministry and MUK to explain the proposed fees.

Mayanja said the increment was a result of a five-year study which aimed at improving academic standards, ICT programmes and strengthen administrative capacity.

The university vice-chancellor, Livingstone Luboobi, said the introduction of electronic systems in the registration and admission of students and registration of numbers on identity cards were a justification for the increment.

The committee was not satisfied and asked the team to revisit the fees structure.
