MBALE district has demanded a share of the Luweero Triangle rehabilitation funds.

Manjiya county MP David Wakikona told President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday that the district deserved a share of the funds for its role in the liberation struggle.

He said Mbale was among the districts to benefit from programmes to rehabilitate districts that were affected by the liberation war.

“We have lobbied the former ministers in charge of Luweero Triangle without success. We now hope that the new minister will make Mbale the first in her up-country tour,” he added. Wakikona was presenting his constituency memorandum to Museveni at Buluchekhe sub-county headquarters.

Museveni said it was important to educate the youth about past struggles to enable them know that the peace enjoyed today was realised through sacrifice.

Museveni was visiting the area to thank Mbale for supporting the liberation struggle and the Movement government. He paid tribute to the late Natolo Masaba for his role in the struggle.

He commissioned two bridges that were washed away by rains. Buweswa Bridge on River Manafa links Kato and Bwambalo sub-counties in Bubulo county. Another bridge on the same river links Bulucheke and Bukigai sub-counties.

Museveni, who arrived in Mbale at 3:00pm, was received at the Pallisa-Mbale border by over 200 vehicles decorated with dry banana leaves, the symbol for a third term for him. The crowd chanted in support of lifting the presidential term limit.

Wakikona said Museveni, who used the Mt. Elgon ranges to wage a war against the dictatorial regimes of Idi Amin and Milton Obote, was aware of the role played by the Bagisu.

He said the freedom fighters needed help and also appealed to the Government to resettle more than 15,000 people displaced by landslides in Manjiya. Museveni said the IDPs would be temporarily resettled under a Government programme.

“The real answer to the problem is to build factories that can absorb 74% of our population that is engaged in agriculture,” he said.

Museveni said Mbale receives sh44b, adding that as revenue improved, their other needs would be met.
He called for modern agriculture.
