PONSIANO Lwakataka, who will be flagged off first in the Alpha Mbarara rally this weekend, bares the burden of being chased by pre-event favourite Riyaz Kurji in a more powerful Subaru Impreza.
But Lwakataka, making a first appearance in a new Subaru Impreza locally rebuilt at Race Mart, has sworn that he cannot be overtaken on road.
“This is a good opportunity to test Kurji. I am now mature, I have no problem with starting first,” Lwakataka said yesterday before departing for route reccing in Mbarara.
Kurji, coming off victory in the Night Support Tanzania rally a fortnight ago, is clear favourite in the rally that will miss regular campaigners Moses Lumala, Charles Muhangi and retired Charlie Lubega.
Uganda People Defend Forces (UPDF) driver W.O 1 Ismail Lule will set off third followed by Arthur Blick, who has shifted from a Toyota Supra to a tiny Mitsubishi Mirage.
Masaka based Jamil Senyonjo, who enjoyed good form early last season before he was sidelined by lack of sponsorship, will hit the road fifth.
Scrutineering of cars will be conducted tomorrow in Mbarara before flag off on Saturday.
The Alpha Dairy Products sponsored rally will end on Sunday.
