Uganda’s population will triple from the current 25 million to 75 million people in less than 50 years, the United Nations has warned.

The UN also said Uganda will be one of nine countries expected to account for a 1.3 billion people population increment, which is half of the total global increment.

A UN study revealed that the world’s population, which stands at 6.5 billion people, will surge to nine billion by 2050.

Most of the growth, according to the study which was based on most recent national censuses, will be in the developing countries. It said populations in the 50 least developed nations is expected to double and that the continued population growth is inevitable.
The study said the population in Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Congo, the DRC, East Timor, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger and Uganda, which are some the world’s poorest, will at least triple.

It said the nine countries which will account for half of the 2.6 billion people increment are India, which hit the one billion people mark in 2002, Pakistan, Nigeria, DRC, Bangladesh, Uganda, USA, Ethiopia and China.

The UN said while numbers explode in such nations, fertility rates in most developed nations have been declining.

It said 51 nations including Germany, Italy, Japan and the former USSR will have fewer people in 2050 than in 2005.

“Since 1990-1995, fertility decline has been the rule among most developed countries,” the study said.

In 15 countries, most of them in southern and eastern Europe, fertility rates have fallen to levels “unprecedented in human history,” it said, below 1.3 children per woman.
By Uganda’s last census in October 2002, the population stood at 24.7 million, a 7.9 million increment from the previous one in 1991.

The 2002 census put the country’s annual population growth at 3.4%. It also projected that in 2015, Uganda will have 32 million people and by 2025, it will be 54 million.
