THE Inspector General of Government (IGG) should target high ranking government officials accused of corruption instead of concentrating on small ones, her predecessor, Jotham Tumwesigye has advised.

Tumwesigye told Justice Faith Mwondha and her deputy, Raphael Baku, at the handover yesterday that he encountered a lot of pressure while investigated high profile officials, from people who wanted to compromise him.

“When investigating high-profile officials, there was a lot of pressure from sources who did a lot to reduce the effectiveness and the powers of the IGG.

“We struggled against this and the struggle continues,” Tumwesigye said.
The former IGG, who opened private law chambers in town when he left office three months ago, said he would still help the IGG if he was asked to.

He advised the new team to ensure independence, because the ombudsman was only answerable to the public and Parliament.

Tumwesigye said people were not interested in statistical quotations of cases but in seeing big shots investigated.

“People want high-profile investigations in graft cases. Investigate the ministers, the permanent secretaries, commissioners and other high-ranking officials,” Tumwesigye said.
