KUMI — The first post-independence army chief, Brig. Shaban Opolot, is to be buried today in military honours in Kachumbala in Bukedea. State minister for health Capt. Mike Mukula said yesterday President Yoweri Museveni had ordered a military burial for Opolot and would be represented at the burial. Opolot’s son said the family was waiting for guidelines from the Government.

Lawyer held

KAMPALA — Jinja-based lawyer John Iyamulemye spent a night at Kampala CPS on Thursday for failing to refund a client’s sh5m. The arrest was ordered by the Law Council before which Iyamulemye appeared on Friday. He was released after his daughter paid part of the money. The client, Imelda, said the money was compensation from Dott Construction Services for a house its car crushed in Kamuli in 1999.

Attorney dies

KAMPALA — Gulu resident State Attorney Herbert Ogwang is dead. Ogwang, 35, a former photo journalist with The New Vision, died of kidney failure at 3:15am on Saturday in Mulago Hospital. His brother, Eric Ayoo, said Ogwang will be buried in Tee-Obia in Lira town tomorrow.

Diesel down

KAMPALA — Shell has again reduced the price of diesel from sh1,440 to sh1,430, bringing the total reduction of diesel prices to sh90 in a month. Shell Uganda country chairman Ivan Kyayonka said the number of diesel users worldwide had reduced and the demand had also reduced.

Man mugged
KAMPALA — A man identified as Ronald Sebuufu was on Thursday mugged by robbers and thrown in a pitlatrine in Bweyogere, Kigandazi zone. He was rescued in the morning after passers-by heard his faint voice from below the pit that is still under construction.

Two held

KAMPALA — A Mwanga II Court magistrate on Friday remanded a couple over attempted murder. Prosecution said Alice Nassuna and Abubakai Mutabazi of Kawala zone in Kasubi wanted to murder their son after they failed to find him food.

40 nabbed
MUKONO — About 40 men were on Friday remanded in Kauga prison over being idle and disorderly.

PRO warns
KAMPALA — The senior public relations officer of parliament, Bernard Eceru, has dismissed claims that it is illegal for parliament to proceed with the constitutional (amendment) bill 2005 in its present form. He told the press at parliament on Thursday that some MPs and a section of the public had misinterpreted rule 92 of the rules of procedure of parliament.

Kizige drops

KAMPALA — Bugabula north MP Moses Kizige on Friday dropped a motion seeking to include mondays and Fridays on parliament’s working days. This follows opposition from the members of the parliamentary committee on rules, discipline and privileges, who said the proposal would alienate MPs from their electorate during the constitutional amendment process.

MBALE — The East African Legislative assembly has urged Kenya, Uganda and tanzania to resolve land disputes as a step towards environmental conservation. Speaking on Friday in Kapsokwony town, Kenya, the MPs said land disputes caused environmental degradation.

DP disowns

WAKISO — The democratic Party (DP) has disassociated itself from a paramilitary youth brigade launched by Kyadondo South MP Issa Kikungwe. District DP chairman Fred Semayobe said youth brigades were not recognised by the party constitution.
