The secular music industry is rising to unprecedented heights with new entrants

The secular music industry is rising to unprecedented heights with new entrants. Edwin Ssegawa, 25, a rising vocalist, is currently making his mark on the Uganda contemporary pop music scene with his rocking song entitled, Kujja Hapa. You must have heard the music, which is currently enjoying substantial airplay on Capital FM and East African Radios. Some fans, who have listened to Ssegawa’s music have mistaken it for Tid’s, a Tanzanian artiste, because of the similarity in the musics’ vocals, expression and style. Others have called Ssegawa Mr Nice’s brother because they resemble. The chart bursting Kujja Hapa (come here) is off Ssegawa’s debut album titled, (assure me). The six-track album, was produced by DJ Lalas and Jason Kiwa and recorded at Three-In-One Studio on Market Street, Kampala. “This album is designed to target the international market, that is why most of the tracks are featuring on the East African Radio,” says Ssegawa also known as Shilo. The songs are in Luganda, English and Kiswahili in a mixture of dancehall, Afro-pop and Lingala. The tracks are: Njagala Buganda, On the move, Nkakasa, Kujja Hapa, Hakuna mwengine and Ssa ngine. Ssegawa is a sole artiste, but not a new face on the local music scene. He has had some collaboration with BSG Labong and has also featured in joint concerts with local artistes. “I hate copycats like many of our artistes today are,” says Ssegawa. The artiste is due to launch his album at Sunny Hall in Namasuba on Good Friday.
