The Hajji Nasser Sebaggala DP faction has defended the formation of youth brigades, saying they are meant to counter the Kalangala Action Plan (KAP).

The faction commissar, Mukasa Mbidde (left), a former Makerere University Guild President, recently said the DP youth brigade was necessary since “the state has a coercive and repressive arm which has been punctuated by the arrival of the KAP.” He added, “ We must generate substantial resistance against this development and restore order.”

He was representing Sebaggala at a media dialogue on the militarisation of the political transition at Speke hotel on Wednesday.

Mbidde said, “The DP youth brigade has a revolutionary order for fearlessness before the enemy of the people.”

He added that they had a self-defence unit within the command structure of the youth brigade.

He said, “ We have lost trust in the accuracy of the institution of parliament. The manipulation thereof cannot deliver a meaningful transition to democracy.”

Mbidde said future plans for the youth brigade included employment for the members, formal education, incorporating them into the army and the police Force.

Mohammed Katende appealed to the Speaker of parliament to allow debate on the election violence report before the referendum.
