ONEGI Obel the sacked National Social Security Fund’s (NSSF) board chairman, has gone to court to challenge his dismissal.

City lawyers Kibeedi and Company Advocates filed Obel’s case on March 11 at the Kampala High Court.
Muzamiru Kibeedi declined to talk about the matter yesterday.

“You will get the details on Thursday when the matter comes up for hearing,” he said.

The matter was allocated to Justice Oscar Richard Okumu Wengi, who fixed it for hearing on Thursday, March 24.

The matter was not served on the Attorney General because Obel’s application is exparte (involving only one party), seeking permission to file judicial review proceedings, challenging the dismissal.

Obel lost his job over the Nsimbe Housing Estate deal, a controversial joint venture between NSSF and Mugoya Construction Company.

In an investigation report to the President last year, the Auditor General, the Inspectorate General of Government, the Criminal Investigation Department and the Internal Security Organisation said Nsimbe land was overvalued by sh4b.

Following the report, President Yoweri Museveni sacked Obel and his fellow board members, including the parastatal’s managing director, Leonard Mpuuma, directing the transfer of NSSF to the finance ministry.

Obel claims that his dismissal was unjustified, arguing he was not given a chance to defend himself.
Kibeedi successfully challenged Maj. Kakooza Mutale’s dismissal over the leadership code.
