SIR — Following Bob Geldof’s remarks about Presidents Museveni and Mugabe at the launch of the commission for Africa Report, many press articles have referred to him as ‘Sir’ and as a British singer. Bob Geldof is a national of the Irish Republic which is not part of Britain.

It is Northern Ireland which is part of the country. The Irish Republic is world-famous for the Guinness drink and horse racing. of recent, it has become very prosperous and some of its famous nationals are Pierce Brusnon
(James Bond) Sr Cephas (former headmistress of Namagunga).

The Irish Republic’s Embassy is on Yusuf Lule Road and not on parliament avenue.

Geldof was knitted by the Queen of Britain sometime ago for his effort in mobilising aid for famine in Ethiopia, but being non-British and non-Commonwealth just like the knighted computer guru, Bill Gates he cannot use “Sir” before his name.
