THE Soroti LC5 chairman has been chosen to head the commonwealth Local Governments Forum.

Capt. Emily Otekat, the Uganda Local governments Association chairman, was elected as chairman last week at a conference in Dublin, Scotland.

The first African to hold the position, Otekat will serve until 2007 but his term could be renewed for another two years.

Addressing a joint news conference at Workers House in Kampala on Friday, local government state minister Richard Nduhuura said Otekat’s election was an honour for Uganda.

He said Otekat, who has been vice-chairman, ably chaired sessions in Dublin and impressed delegates.
