Help for addicts can also be found at Serenity Centre

SIR — Thank you for highlighting the dangers of alcohol abuse.

SIR — Thank you for highlighting the dangers of alcohol abuse. Yes, it
only takes a willing soul to return to light. Unfortunately, other than
Butabika Hospital, no reference was made to where to find help. Interested victims or concerned family or friends might try Serenity Centre in Nsambya (041-267580, 077-613832). Serenity has helped many, many people. They also
know meeting times and places in Uganda for Alcoholics Anonymous, the worldwide successful help group. Finally, as the article points out, family, friends and employers can do much to help their sick. It is called “tough love,”. This means people should quit “rescuing” and “enabling”. Refuse to protect the person from facing the consequences of his or her addiction! Let them be embarrassed, get hungry, suspended, or lose their jobs.
This brings the addict to accept help more quickly. Even more, it protects the concerned person from becoming as sick as the addicted one — with worry, anger and other emotions. Alcoholism is a treatable disease and there is hope.
