Former president Milton Obote’s imminent return has excited the people of Lango who have called on the government to provide him with all benefits of a former head of state.
The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party president is scheduled to return on May 27.
“If Obote returns to Uganda in the near future, whether as a political leader or a retired politician, the government should give him all due respect of a former president as stipulated in the constitution,” said the majority of people interviewed on Wednesday.
UPC’s Presidential Policy Commission chairman Dr. James Rwanyarare on Wednesday announced Obote’s return at a press conference in Kampala.
Lira district UPC chairman Yeko Bua said the return of Obote was a blessing to the party especially during the transition to multiparty politics.
“We (UPC) have registered and we are free to handle our party issues in broad daylight. UPC needs its party president to spearhead its activities as we move towards the 2006 elections,” Bua said.
Lira municipal deputy mayor Nelson Adea said Obote’s return would be a big credit to President Yoweri Museveni.
“The return of Obote to Uganda is healthy. The Government has opened up political space and it would be awkward for Obote to continue living in exile. Ugandans should give Museveni and the Movement a credit for that,” Adea said.
