IT'S their hobby to flirt with death. Pete Meredith, Hendi Coetzee, Jane Dicey and Dale Jardine from South Africa together with Alexandra Mitialovic from Canada and Paul Bibi from Uganda have overcome lethal rapids, fierce crocodiles and hippopotami during kayaking expeditions on many rivers in Africa, Europe and America.

On April 8, a six-man team will set out to explore the un-chartered waters of River Kagera in what promises to be the most gruelling expedition in East and Central Africa. This is the first ever group of kayakers to venture into River Kagera.

The three-four weeks expedition, to be shown on National Geographic Channel, is a 1,000km journey. The Starting point is the source of River Kagera on Mount Bigigi (2,995m) in Rwanda.

From Rwanda, they will kayak through Tanzania and then connect, via Lake Victoria to the source of the Nile in Uganda. “We do not expect any security worries. Although River Kagera may not be as steep, we expect it to be a challenging expedition.

Hippopotami are the most terrifying and there are lots of them in the Kagera National Park,” says Dale Jardine says.

Whatever injuries occur, Jane Dicey, a surgeon at Mulago Hospital, will provide the medical back-up. Robert Kigula, Nile Breweries’ brand manager, signed a contract, in which Nile Breweries has offered sh18m to facilitate the expedition.
