Lubaga South MP Ken Lukyamuzi has accused the Ministry of Energy of delaying Parliament to debate a petition report on power tariffs.

Addressing the press at Parliament yesterday, Lukyamuzi said the report had recommended lowering of electricity tariffs.

Flanked by Sebuliba Mutumba (Kawempe South), Lukyamuzi said they would lead another demonstration next month following the recent rise of electricity prices by 24%.

On January 3 last year, Lukyamuzi led a demonstration in Kampala against electricity tariffs that had shot up from sh94 to sh171.4 per unit.

Several legislators petitioned parliament and the natural resources committee was assigned to investigate the matter.

On April 1 this year, electricity prices went up, something that Sebuliba and Lukyamuzi (right) say could have been averted had Parliament discussed the report.

They said the people might devise means of stealing the power.
“The increment is unfair. They have removed scholarships, increased tuition fees and electricity tariffs,” Sebuliba said.

The march will begin at 11:00am at the constitutional square, through Kampala streets and end with a public rally at the clock tower.
On whether they had permission from the police, Lukyamuzi said, “We do not expect any negativity.”
